HS District Recap

This past Wednesday and Thursday the Spring Hill High School track teams traveled to Bullard to compete in the District 16 4A track meet. Spring Hill traveled with over 70 athletes, four divisions, and returned with over 40 medals, seven first place finishers, and ten Area qualifiers to get to continue in post district training.

For the girls this season has been one focusing on rebuilding, learning how to train, and developing skill. The distance and mid distance crews came in strong, and were able to put all their hard work for the past two months to the test, as they all finished with PR’s and medals to conclude the season. Then for the sprinters ending a season with the fastest 4×200 of the season, put together with a group of girls who only a week prior decided to bind together their efforts and give SH a relay. For the girls it wasn’t all about winning. Combining four girls all who are different, fighting for the same goal, to represent SH with everything they had. One a senior, her last race to demonstrate her dedication to the SH track program, another a junior who’s followed in the seniors footsteps and already looking ahead. Then two coming off of soccer playoffs a week prior, knowing they needed to step up and do their part. It was these four runners, that not only ran for SH, but who didn’t give up on SH. They might have ran their last race, but they gave hope to those who just learned to run their first. Sometimes you have to be willing to start at the bottom, to reach the top, but as long as you don’t give up…you’re always moving up. And to finish for the girls was Junior Liz Whitwell, who after missing last year by a short margin, qualified for Area, keeping the girls program moving forward to the next level.

For the guys this year’s district meet was all about revenge. After a disappointing finish to last year’s qualifiers list, the boys team rallied together and pulled off, not only Individuals, but a mile relay as well. Starting off the qualifiers was senior Kase White with his excelling performance in the 3200, nearly lapping the entire field to bring home the gold. Following was the pair of Vaulters who soared to PR’s to send them to the next level and a second (Canaan Knox) and fourth (Gilbert Garcia) place finishes. To round out the first day’s order of competition was the final qualifier Robbie Graham in his 4th place finish in Disc. Day two consisted of those who advanced to the finals, high jump, and the 800/1600 races. Where Spring Hill was able to nab the top four sports in those as well. In high jump sophomore, Dayson Adaway was able to tie for first with a jump of 6-0, and then joined in the area qualifiers for HJ by senior Scott Deal in fourth. Then for the running events Zach Hughes was able to secure his trip early with a fourth place finish in the 400, as teammate Reese Phillips raced a five second PR in the 800 for a third place finish. In the 110 hurdles Ryan Willis was able to qualify with a fourth place finish. Then nearing the end of the night Kase White, once again was able to run away from the field for a first place finish in the 1600, crossing the finish line 22 seconds before second place. However, the grad finale of the evening came as the mile relay chased down the field after being in sixth place to seal the deal and get out of district for the first time in many years.

Overall, SH will send nine to Area, with many in contending to qualify for regionals. The area meet will be Held at Gladewater Bear Stadium NEXT THURSDAY.
