Pine Tree-Katy Ranch Recap

PINE TREE KATY RANCH RECAP (9/19/2015) –

HOT. HUMID. MUGGY. HILLY. For the Spring Hill cross country team those four words would easily sum up the Katy Ranch CC meet this past weekend. Nearly half way through the season, when temperatures are suppose to be dropping…the sun allowed no such thing. Bringing with the heat was the East Texas humidity and as the day eased onward the muggy air soon brought out all the sweat, before races even begun. Yet, despite the Temps and the legendary hill known as “Big Mamma”, the runners who represented SHCC never backed down. For six solid races, SH constantly maintained a strong lead and killer finish. From the Varsity boys, who have been dealing with sickness and injuries, to the JH girls who nearly all managed to improve in times and experience, SH once again left their mark.

For the first race of the day Kase White chased down Evan Barron, whose home field advantage proved successful, as White raced in with a second place finish in the Large School Varsity division. Followed by teammates (Fisher, Fruge, and Johnson), one shy of making a team the boys all finished once again with negative times.

Following the Varity boys was the outstanding race provided by the JV boys, who all finished in the top quarter of the race! Working as a team, stride for stride. Crossing the line first for them was Manuel Florres, only to be closely followed by teammate Carson McNabb a second later. Coming in just a few seconds later were teammates Ethan and Peyton White, both continuing their race records by posting faster times for the third race in a row.

Next up was the Varsity and JV girl’s races. With the motto, “take each race as a learning tool”, the girls once again made strides of improvement. By the time their race took off the temps were already scorching, yet bound by determination the girls in both races proved just how tough the SH girls really are. As freshmen, Kinsey Smith showed true grit as she paced her way to a fourth place finish, out of 147 runner’s total.

In running, like in life, it’s not usually how you begin, but how you finish. And today it was just that. Ending with the two Junior High races, both SH boys and girls stepped up to the starting line wearing those SH uniforms, with one goal true goal…to represent their school with all they have. Be a strong teammate and never quit till the end is reached. The JH boys coming off of an outstanding meet the previous weekend, had a little pressure, yet it never phased them. Finishing as a team in 3rd place, out of a total of 15 teams in schools from 1A to 6A, having 3 of the seven runners finish in the top 15! Then the JH girls race (despite being the last and hottest race of the day), the girls continue to thrive, both in energy and enthusiasm, and passion and determination. Finishing 5th out of 14 teams, and all improving their times from the previous week.

In conclusion of this day, tired and beyond sweaty, I as one of the Coaches of this amazing group of runners couldn’t be more proud. Together we are getting better daily and meet times are proving the hard work that is put in. New members continue to ask about joining and I know it is not the sport itself, because CC is tough, painful, and sleep depriving. Yet, it is the team that makes each moment worth it all. I am blessed and this team is blessed. SH CC we are LEAVING OUR MARK!
